Una conversación de esta unidad

Saturday night, a cocktail bar in Sanlitun. Anya arrives twenty minutes late, a little flustered.

Sorry I'm late. Just now on the subway, some guy kept talking to me.

Are you OK? Did he touch you?

No. I said "no thanks" and moved to another carriage.

Well done. No need to explain, and no need to smile.

But he still asked for my WeChat… what should I have said?

Not interested. OK, I've got it!

Notas culturales

A Sanlitun bar. A man offers to buy Malèna a drink. She says 不用了. He smiles: "别客气!" and waves the bartender over anyway. Why might he think her first no was only politeness?

In China a first refusal is often polite modesty, so make a real no unmistakable: repeat it, flat, with 真的.

Mainland China: declining an offer once or twice out of modesty (客气) is good manners, and hosts are expected to insist, so some men treat a first no as a formality. 不用了 is a real no; to make it impossible to misread, say it again without a smile: 真的不用了. You never owe anyone a drink.

— Really, no thank you.

Catherine, back from a work trip to Shenzhen, tells Malèna about the pink signs on the metro platform marking one carriage. What are those carriages?

Women-priority carriages: at rush hour women are asked to use them, but men are not fined for boarding.

Mainland China: some metros, such as Guangzhou and Shenzhen, have women-priority carriages (女性优先车厢), mostly at rush hour. They are a request, not a rule: nobody is fined. Not every city has them. Wherever you are, groping on a crowded train is harassment: say it out loud, move away, and tell staff or call the police.

— Someone is harassing me!

1 a.m. outside the bar. Malèna has booked a Didi home. Anya grabs her arm: "分享行程给我!" What is Anya asking her to do?

Use the app's share-trip feature, so Anya can follow the car's route live until she's home.

Mainland China: Didi, the main ride-hailing app, has a safety centre with share-trip (行程分享), which sends a friend the car's live route, and an emergency-help button that can contact the police. Sharing your trip is a normal, caring thing friends ask for after a night out, like 到家了给我发个消息.

— Share your trip with me, and message me when you get home.

Joe asks Malèna which number to call if a night out ever goes really wrong in Beijing. Which number reaches the police in mainland China?

110

Mainland China: 110 is the police, 120 an ambulance, 119 the fire service. Calls are free, even from a phone with no credit. "To call the police" is 报警, and you can say it to bar staff too: they will call for you.

— I want to call the police!

Catherine scrolls through the WeChat Moments of a man who has been messaging Anya. Five different women in five weeks of photos. She snorts: "海王。" What does she mean by 海王, "sea king"?

A player who keeps a whole "fish pond" of love interests on the go at once.

Mainland Chinese internet slang: a 海王 juggles many romantic prospects, his 鱼塘 ("fish pond"), and calls none of them his partner. 渣男 is the broader insult for a man who cheats or plays with feelings. Both are mocking slang, not profanity, and are said of women too (渣女).

— He's a jerk, and a player too.
