Una conversación de esta unidad

Saturday afternoon, a cab on the Second Ring Road. The brake lights stretch all the way to Dongzhimen.

Damn it, stuck in traffic again!

Joe, you've said a lot of swear words today.

This is the Second Ring Road. Everyone swears here.

Anya: 好,那我也试试:靠,太堵了!OK, then I'll try too: damn, it's so jammed!

So what do I say in front of my boss?

It's clean: anyone can hear it.

Notas culturales

Anya's first cab ride in Beijing. Before they've left the hutong, the driver has asked where she's from, what she earns and what she thinks of the traffic. How should Anya read this?

As normal: Beijing cab drivers are famously chatty, and joining in is half the fun.

Mainland China: Beijing's 的哥 (cab drivers; 的 comes from 的士, "taxi", and a woman driver is a 的姐) are known across the country for talking: history, politics, food, your salary. Questions about money or age are ordinary small talk there, not prying. Answer what you like, deflect what you don't, and you'll pick up more Beijing slang in one ride than in a week of class.

— Beijing cab drivers really love to chat.

At a Sanlitun bar, Joe's friend reads the cocktail prices and says 我去. Ten minutes later, her colleague drops his phone and says 我靠. How strong are those two words?

Mild: both are stand-ins for a much cruder word, and 我去 is clean enough for almost anyone.

Mainland China: 我靠 and 我去 started as softened versions of the crude 我操 ("fuck"), the way English says "shoot" for "shit". 我去 is now so mild that people who never swear use it. 我靠 keeps a little edge: fine with friends, not in a meeting.

— Whoa, that's expensive!

Sunday lunch at a friend's family home in Beijing. Grandpa sits at the head of the table, and Joe drops a dumpling in his own lap. What should Joe say?

Something clean, like 哎呀 ("oops"): no swearing in front of elders.

Across China, swearing in front of elders (长辈), parents or a friend's family is a real loss of face, for you and for whoever brought you. People who curse all day with friends switch it off at the family table. 哎呀 and 不好意思 cover any accident.

— Don't swear in front of your elders.

After Anya's conference talk, a young engineer from the audience comes up and says: 你的演讲真牛! What does he mean?

Your talk was awesome: 牛 ("cow") is everyday slang for impressive.

Mainland China: 牛 ("cow") on its own is casual, clean praise: 真牛, 太牛了. Add 逼 and you get 牛逼, crude and much stronger, often typed 牛B or NB online. Careful with 吹牛, "to blow the cow": that one means bragging.

— Your talk was awesome!

Stuck on the Second Ring Road, the driver points out of the window: 这儿以前是城墙。 What is he talking about?

The Second Ring Road runs roughly where Beijing's old city wall stood.

Beijing: the Ming-dynasty city wall was almost entirely torn down in the 1950s and 60s, and the Second Ring Road and subway Line 2 were built roughly along its line. That's why so many exits and stations carry old gate names: 东直门, 西直门, 前门. Only a few stretches and gate towers survive.

— Driver, let's take the Second Ring Road.
